Choosing a Yoga Mat: Thickness, Grip and Why It Matters

Mat thickness is the specification everyone reads and grip is the one that decides whether you enjoy the practice. Both matter, but not equally.

Thickness

Around 4 mm suits most standing practice — enough padding for knees without losing the feel of the floor. Around 6 mm and above is kinder for restorative work and floor-based pilates, at the cost of stability in balance poses.

Grip

Grip is what stops your hands sliding forward in downward dog. Textured surfaces generally outperform smooth ones once you start to sweat. If you practise in a warm room, prioritise grip over everything else.

Weight and transport

A dense mat grips better and lasts longer, but a 2 kg mat is one you will leave at home. If you carry it anywhere, check the weight before the thickness.
