Pilates Ball or Ring: What Each One Trains
Small pilates props look interchangeable and are not. A soft ball and a magic circle do close to opposite jobs.
The small ball
Usually 20–25 cm and softly inflated. Placed between the knees or under the lower back, it provides feedback and support rather than resistance. It tells you when your alignment has drifted.
The ring
A magic circle provides resistance. Squeezed between the knees, ankles or hands, it recruits the inner thighs, glutes or chest depending on placement.
Which to buy first
If you are working on core control and alignment, start with the ball. If you already have a stable practice and want resistance, the ring is the more useful addition.
Inflation
Under-inflate the ball deliberately. A rock-hard ball defeats the purpose — it should give under moderate pressure.
